Workshops

  • Polymer clay classes can be scheduled for 5 or more people.
  • Instruction outside of the Winston-Salem, NC area is available.  There must be at least 5 students who have pre-registered and pre-paid.  Travel costs will be added to class fee.
  • Students must purchase the Premo! Sculpey before (or on the night of) the workshop.  Tools and other necessary materials for creating the beads, pendants and tiles will be provided.
  • After the workshop, the students will take the beads home to bake (Premo! Sculpey should bake at 30 minutes per 1/4" of thickness at 275 degrees F).  If the bead has any rough edges after baking, use wet/dry sandpaper (found near the paint section of hardware stores) and wet sand the bead.

Introduction to Cane With Polymer Clay

Examples of Beads made with Cane
This class will introduce the student to creating canes using polymer clay.  The students will create a flower cane, checkered cane, spiral cane and bullseye cane.  They will then learn how to reduce, slice and apply the cane to beads.  As the students work with the clay they will be introduced to the color wheel, learn how to mix colors, how to marble the clay, and why clay should “rest” when creating canes.

Mokume Gane and Stamping on Polymer Clay

Example of Mokume Gane Beads and Seed Beads
This class will introduce the students two techniques:  creating mokume gane and stamping on polymer clay.  Mokume gane is the polymer clay technique of layering very thin sheets of contrasting clay into a stack, distorting the stacked layers so they are no longer totally flat, and then shaving off small thin slices (usually from the top of the slab) to show the rings and swirls produced by the distorted layering.  The students will also learn how to combine their love of stamping with polymer clay and acrylic paints to create unique pendants, beads and/or bookmarks.

Inclusions and Extrusions
Did you ever wonder what to do with those old spices that you don’t want to use in cooking?  Add texture and create faux finishes with polymer clay and common ingredients by mixing the ingredients with polymer clay.  The students will also learn how to add extrusions - created by the clay gun, cutouts, or by hand - to add texture and dimension.

Skinner Blend Method
You've seen those wonderfully smooth gradations in clay pieces, but didn't know how to create them?  This class introduces the student to the Skinner Blend method of mixing polymer clay colors.  These pieces are then used in bulls-eye cane, spiral cane and backgrounds to create bewitching beads, pendants and tiles.

Translucent Clay Blends

Example of Translucent Clay Beads and Glass Beads
This class teaches the student how to get that lampworked effect of glass beads by using translucent clay and blends of colors.  Students will learn how to create canes with a combination of translucent and opaque clays.  Students will then learn how to reduce, slice and apply the cane to beads.  In addition, students will learn techniques for mixing translucent clays with Pearlex powders to create stunning faux finishes.
